The history of wedding rings harks back to the concepts of loyalty and fidelity, a ring that symbolically binds two people together for life. It's no coincidence that fides means faith in Latin; its round, spherical shape represents the concept of union.

A consecrated union of two people who become one. The material used, usually yellow gold, is itself a symbol of the eternity of love between husband and wife. In Christian culture, yellow gold has this meaning. The wedding ring is placed on the left ring finger because an ancient belief, dating back to the Egyptians, holds that a small artery runs from there up the arm and straight to the heart. The symbolism of the circle (from anulus also derives anulare) of the wedding ring harks back to pagan wedding ceremonies, during which it was traditional to draw a circle on the ground around the spouses as a sign of good luck.

A circle that in Roman times would become the annulus probulus, the engagement ring that first men and later women were required to wear as a pledge of their promise of eternal love. Finally, the practice of engraving the names of the spouses on the inside of the wedding ring dates back to the 1700s.

Over time, wedding rings have become a symbol inseparable from the very concept of marriage, representing, in their spherical perfection, the perfection of a union, the union of the lives of two people in love who, upon meeting, merge into one.
